Tessa Talks with Interior Designer Candyce
Candyce James is an interior architect who works for award-winning, Melbourne-based interior architecture firm Mim Design. At 24 years old, Candyce is lives a clean, balanced lifestyle and is constantly searching for tips and tricks to help fulfil her best self.
Q: Where were you born and raised?
A: I was born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria.
Q: How did where you were raised influence your healthy habits?
A: I was raised in a very health conscious family, so I think that definitely had an influence on my own health and wellness.
Q: What is one of your daily rituals?
A: One of my daily rituals at the moment is meditation and journaling. I find meditating, whether it’s 5 minutes or half an hour, a great way to drop stress and clear the mind.
Q: What are you currently working on?
A: I’m currently working on my inner self and really trying to understand the mind and how I can be my best self, through mediation, yoga or listening to a mindfulness podcast.
Q: What is one of the biggest challenges you have faced in your life career wise?
A: Career wise, I faced many challenges with figuring out what I wanted to do, but the most pressure I’ve faced has actually been within the workplace. I found it very confronting and challenging mentally, working in an office environment and dealing with constant pressures and expectations. So that’s something I’ve really had to overcome and work on.
Q: What are some ways you handle stress and pressure?
A: Ways I find that help me personally deal with pressure and stress is exercise, as this helps clear my mind, and also mediation is a big one for me. When I meditate, I usually light a candle, turn the lights off and listen to calming music or a mediation issuing the bloom app. I also love journaling and find this an amazing way to clear my mind.
Q: What is your greatest strength?
A: My greatest strength would be my ability to overcome my fears and always find motivation to seek what I want in life.
Q: What is your greatest weakness?
A: My greatest weakness would be that I take on other people’s emotions. I am easily moved by different peoples energies and moods which can affect my own.
Q: Who inspires you?
A: I am constantly inspired by my mum, sister and dad. They are all very determined people and I look to them for inspiration and motivation. Also my partner, he’s very driven and inspires me to be confident and fearless.
Q: What inspires you?
A: I am inspired by what surrounds me, by the natural environment. I am also inspired by different types of architecture and interiors, through magazines or on instagram. I actually have my own design account called the upscale, where I post all of the interiors that I love.
Q: How is sustainability a part of your life?
A: Sustainability has been something that I am constantly trying to learn about and find different ways that I can make an impact. I am an interior designer, so I love finding new materials and furniture that is made sustainably and that can have an impact on the future of our world.
Q: What is your biggest wellness indulgence?
A: Before the world of Covid, I used to indulge in sauna treatments. I found these amazing for detoxifying the body and clearing the mind.
Q: What are your 3 clean – non toxic beauty must haves?
A: At the moment my top 3 would be: Aveda hair care, Love Beauty and RMS beauty products, Dr. Bronnas body wash.
Q: What are your 3 wellness must haves?
A: My three wellness must haves are: The Beauty Chef Gut Primer, James Wellness Tonic, another James wellness product that is yet to be released.
Q: What’s your ideal way to switch off?
A: Mediation is my ideal way to unwind and switch off before I got to sleep.
Q: What are you currently reading, watching and or listening to?
A: I’m currently obsessed with podcasts. I’m listening to about that life by India Vine, Shameless and I’m watching Ray Donavon (I can thank my sister for that, it’s amazing).
Q: Where is your favorite place to travel?
A: My favourite place to travel would be Byron bay. I love the culture up there, the energy and the beach. It’s a beautiful place.
Q: What do you eat for breakfast in the morning?
A: At the moment, I’ve been intermittent fasting so I will usually have breakfast at around 11am. Usually I will have avocado on toast with Vegemite or overnight oats with banana.
